Perfect for runners who have taken our Intro to Trail Class or who have tried their own trail running and want to try some bigger, more challenging terrain in a gentle, easy-going group. We will get a little bit more in depth with blaze reading, technical terrain, and elevation while exploring the numerous trails within South Mountain Reservation. Do you want to go a little farther into the woods?
Compared to hitting the pavement, trail running burns 10 percent more calories, while improving balance and agility. Runners get a tougher workout because the uneven terrain demands more lateral movements (think dodging branches and avoiding rocky patches) that keep the core engaged. Trail running also works different muscles with every step, while a shorter stride strengthens ankles and hips and reduces the impact on joints. Many runners, even at the highest level, incorporate trail running into their training to prevent overuse injuries.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY LEVEL PRIOR TO START OF PROGRAM
Because of the more challenging nature of trail running, participants should currently be running a minimum of 3 to 4 days per week with a total weekly mileage of 9 miles or more.
