Fit Family: 1-Mile Training Program
The 6-week FIT FAMILY program is committed to inspiring kids (ages 5 to 13) and families to develop a lifelong love of running and healthy lifestyle. Children and parents together can unlock potential as they have fun achieving goals through the discipline of running.
The program will develop and encourage children and families of all running abilities to progress from their current level of fitness to being able to complete a one mile run* at the conclusion of the program. This will be achieved through a variety of games which incorporate running. We will also do a small amount of core and stretching at the beginning and end of each lesson.
Parents, guardian or caretakers of 14 years or older must participate and accompany children throughout the training program.
An optional goal event is the Midland Avenue Mile, Sunday, August 20th.

**Please note: parents are responsible for their children during practice sessions.
Children must be between the ages of 5 years old and 13 years old to participate. Children must have proper shoe wear (no high tops, converse-type sneakers, etc.). And, all children must be accompanied by either an adult, guardian or a caretaker of at least 14 years old.
The program will include:
Pacers, sweepers, and Fleet Feet helpers
Leader(s) for cool down stretches
Snacks and water
• Warm up of easy jogging, dynamic exercises and stretches
• Short talk - These will be frequent, but not a part of each practice (topics are running-related)
• Split into groups for roughly 20 minutes of exercise
• Cool down including light stretches
• Water provided
To meet the individual needs of your children we will break into small, fun groups based on varying development. A child may move from one group to another as he/she gets comfortable. These groups are flexible to encourage growth for each child throughout the program:
Team Fireball - Children who need frequent walking breaks while running or exercising. This child is able to sustain a running pace for less than 60 seconds without stopping. Our goal for this group is to increase the length of time we can run without needing a walking break.
Team Dynamite - Children who need frequent walking breaks while running or exercising. This child is able to sustain a running pace for less than 90 seconds without stopping. Our goal for this group is to increase the length of time we can run without needing a walking break.
Team Rocket - Children who are able to run for 2 minutes or more without needing a walking break. Typical practice will consist of a variety of running workouts that will be geared toward increasing your child’s endurance so that he or she will be able to run 1 mile without needing a walking break.
Team Torpedo - Children who can run 1 mile or more (8 minutes) without taking a walking break. Ask your child if he or she has completed the mile for P.E. and whether or not they needed a break. This group will be geared toward increasing your child’s strength and endurance.
